Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the 2026 tax math on this site?
All calculators use 2026 federal brackets per Rev. Proc. 2025-32 + IRS Notice 2025-67, including OBBBA carryovers (SALT $40,400, CTC $2,200, no-tax-on-overtime $12,500/$25,000, no-tax-on-tips $25,000, OBBBA AMT exemption + phaseout). State engines model 15 progressive states on 2026 schedules plus per-state surcharges (MA 4% millionaires, ME 2% over $1M, MD 2% on net cap gains > $350K AGI). All values verified against state DOR sources.
Is this site free? Do I need to sign up?
Yes, free. No signup, no paywall, no email capture. Every calculator, profession guide, state tax guide, and explainer page is open — type your numbers, see your take-home pay, leave when you're done.
Does the calculator handle salaried, hourly, and 1099 / freelancer income?
Yes — three paths. Salaried W-2: enter annual gross + state + filing status + dependents + pre-tax deductions on the Salary Calculator. Hourly W-2: use the Hourly to Salary Calculator to convert, then run the result through the salary calculator. 1099 / self-employed: use the 1099 Tax Calculator, which handles self-employment tax (15.3% on the first $184,500 of net SE income for 2026), Schedule C deductions, the QBI 20% deduction, Solo 401(k) limits, and quarterly estimated payment math.
Will it account for my 401(k), HSA, and other pre-tax deductions?
Yes. The salary calculator has dedicated inputs for 401(k) percent, employer match (with a tiered-match toggle for the common "100% up to 4% then 50% up to 6%" pattern), HSA, and FSA. These reduce federal taxable income and most states' taxable income too. New Jersey is the notable exception — NJ does NOT conform to federal pre-tax treatment of 401(k), HSA, or FSA, and the engine handles that automatically when you select NJ. California also taxes HSA contributions and growth at the state level; the engine handles that too.
How often do you update for new tax law?
Major federal updates land within 30 days of IRS publication (Rev. Proc., Notices, OBBBA implementation). State updates roll in as DORs publish — the 15 progressive states get a Q3-Q4 sweep when 2026 schedules are released. We track an internal maintenance calendar that triggers reviews ahead of each scheduled IRS release window.
Do the profession × state guides reflect actual employer data?
Salary ranges blend BLS OEWS data (occupation-by-state median + percentile spreads), industry-specific surveys, and named-employer benchmarks (e.g. Houston Methodist for nurses, Cleveland Clinic for physicians, Lower Merion SD for teachers). Each guide identifies the real systems / districts driving the comp tier. We do not aggregate anonymous user-submitted data.
