How we keep figures current
Tax figures are reviewed each November when the IRS publishes the following year's inflation-indexed values, and again when state revenue departments publish their schedules (typically December–February). Primary sources:
- Federal: IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (2026 brackets + standard deduction), IRS Notice 2025-67 (2026 retirement-plan limits), SSA 2026 wage base announcement
- State: 51 jurisdiction-specific schedules from each state's Department of Revenue, Franchise Tax Board, or Department of Taxation
- City wage taxes: NYC Administrative Code §11-1701 (3.078–3.876%), Philadelphia / Pittsburgh wage tax, Detroit / Cleveland / Cincinnati city tax, MD county piggyback rates
- Specialty: CA SDI (SB 951 of 2022, uncapped 1.1%), WA Capital Gains Tax (RCW 82.87), MA Fair Share Amendment surtax, NIIT (IRC §1411), Additional Medicare (IRC §3101(b)(2))
Last reviewed: May 2026.
What we model — and what we don't
Modeled
- •Federal brackets (single, MFJ, MFS, HOH) and standard deduction
- •State income tax for all 51 jurisdictions — flat rates and progressive brackets
- •FICA (Social Security + Medicare), Additional Medicare 0.9%, NIIT 3.8% on investment income
- •Common pre-tax contributions: 401(k), HSA, FSA, traditional IRA
- •State-specific items: CA SDI, NJ FLI/TDI, NY PFL, MD county piggyback, NYC city wage tax, OR PFA/Metro SHS, WA Cares
Not modeled
- •Itemized deductions beyond the standard deduction
- •AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) — relevant for ISO exercises and certain high-income filings
- •Every local city earnings tax (~600 Ohio RITA/CCA jurisdictions, smaller PA EIT cities)
- •Equity compensation timing (RSU vest schedules, ISO/NSO exercises, ESPP discount math)
- •Most state tax credits beyond the major ones we explicitly cover in the guides
