How Bonus Taxes Work in 2026

The IRS classifies bonuses as supplemental wages — income paid in addition to your regular salary. Employers must withhold federal income tax on bonuses using one of two methods: the flat rate or the aggregate method.

Flat Rate Method

The IRS allows employers to withhold a flat 22% on supplemental wages up to $1 million. Simple, predictable, widely used.

Aggregate Method

Your bonus is added to your annual salary to find your marginal bracket. Withholding is the difference in tax between salary alone and salary + bonus.

On top of federal taxes, your bonus is subject to FICA taxes: Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% additional over $200k). Most states also withhold state income tax on bonuses at either their supplemental rate or your marginal rate.

Keep in mind that withholding is not the same as your final tax bill. When you file your return in April, the IRS reconciles your total withholding against your actual tax liability. If too much was withheld, you get a refund. If too little, you owe the difference.
